Who'll stop the rain...

Well, they may not stop the rain, but it looks like the Washington State Department of Ecology is going to seriously interfere with rainwater harvesting. Check out this press release:

Department of Ecology News Release - June 10, 2008
Ecology begins statewide rulemaking for rainwater collection
OLYMPIA – To clarify regulations governing the collection and use of rainwater, Ecology is seeking the public’s help in drafting a statewide rainwater rule.
Three open house sessions for education and public discussion about collecting rainwater for beneficial use are scheduled this month in Everett, Lacey and Wenatchee.
Ecology doesn’t require homeowners to obtain water right permits to collect and store small amounts of rainwater.
The new rule for the first time would define how much rainwater can be collected and used before a permit is required. The rule isn’t intended to regulate storage and release of rainwater when no “beneficial use” will be made of the water.
Under state law, beneficial uses include recreation, irrigation, residential water supplies and power generation.
Washington law identifies rainwater as a water resource of the state. Residential rainwater collection systems can range from a 50-gallon rain barrel to cisterns of 30,000 gallons or more. Commercial systems can be much larger.
Ecology is seeking public comment on what the threshold should be for requiring a water right permit for those systems that could affect the water supply of senior water right holders or stream flows in some river basins. Non-potable uses of rainwater typically include toilet flushing and irrigation for gardens.
In water-short areas such as the San Juan Islands, some homeowners use rainwater as the sole source of their water supply. Ecology is especially interested in encouraging rainwater collection in urban areas like Puget Sound where it can be used to reduce stormwater runoff and supplement municipal water supplies.
"A statewide rule would remove the ambiguity about rainwater collection from existing water law,” said Ken Slattery, manager of Ecology’s Water Resources Program. “We want to ensure that collection and storage of rainwater happens in a way that is consistent with the protection of stream flows and water rights."http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wr/hq/rwh.html

On a more lively note, we attended a solstice party down-county at Endor. Well, it's not really Endor, but it looks pretty darn close, being in the rainforest on the banks of the Skagit river. We toasted the longest day of the year with sima and doughnuts, traditional Finnish solstice fare, thanks to one of our hosts' Finnish heritage. Here's a pic of sima in the bottle. That's raisins in the bottom of it. If anyone is interested, I can post the recipe with pictures another day. You can also read more here.

A couple days of sun makes a huge difference to the plants. This single poppy is now surrounded by many more. The garden is perking up and most of the replants are doing great. Still not sure about getting a tomato harvest in time though. And we found out that wireworms like radishes! We may have to grow them in a raised bed with hand-fluffed soil next year.
Mercia and Magnus, tandem sleeping. They've gotten good about going outside, but still come in to use the litterbox. Oh well...
This weekend, we'll start building the range shelter. It will have 2 open stalls, one for Ryder and one spare. Should be loads of fun, considering the forecast is for temps in the 80's!

Raining like kittens & cats!

The weather is not cooperating much with our outdoor plans & projects. The cats, on the other hand, don't seem to mind a bit as long as there is a comfy place to hang out.
Here's Mercia multitasking, grooming between naps, or maybe it's the other way around...
And Magnus, casual as ever in the face of paparazzi.
And finally, Master Crichton himself, giving his new cat tree a test run. Only the finest Whatcom County orchardgrass hay for this feline connaisseur!

If the weather ever catches up with the calendar, we'll continue setting fence posts on the last unfenced corner, finishing the garden prep, and getting ready for Nash's arrival on Monday. Doug did fine with the vet Friday. He's no longer a bull, and everyone is up to date on vaccinations. Stella has learned the exciting trick of holding back her milk for Doug, so we've been working with her to unlearn it, or at least loosen up a bit. It is fairly common for a first calf heifer to be really focused on the calf, and not interested in sharing with people.

News flash!
In the middle of a rain storm, at bedtime, Magnus has figured out the cat door. These kittens have previously shown no interest in going outside, even though they're nearly a year old! Now they'll probably be up all night running in & out, practicing their new skill.

Spring fever

Here's the kittles, wishing they had earned such a wonderful breakfast before chores.
Stella & Doug, in a mother and son sprint down paddock 2.
And a couple of video clips of mom & baby.

........................................................................................................
Milking log:

Stella has been giving about 2 quarts after being apart from Doug 3-5 hours. I notice she lets down again for him maybe 10 minutes after I'm done. A more experienced friend says I may be too slow to get everything. I didn't realize that the window of time a cow lets her milk down could be as short as 10 minutes, so my next efforts will be to speed up milking a bit.
Today, 3/18, I tried milking a bit faster, and got 3 quarts! I think I could have gotten more if I tried a little longer, but I wanted to end on a positive note.
Stella is getting better about the whole routine, though she still doesn't like being herded/pulled into her stall. She also knows when I ask "want apple?" that it means a treat is coming.

Oh those cute felons!

Also known as Felions in some circles....
Magnus and Mercia are 100% people cats. Despite leaving the door a jar a few times to see if they'd venture out on nice days, they have declined, wanting no part of that scary outdoors.
They'll peak, but no way they are going out THERE.
See what I mean about "people" cats? Magnus even sits like a person beside me on the recliner!
Wherever you go, whatever you're doing, Magnus is there to help.
Here he is folding laundry. Now isn't that helpful? In all actuality, I fold, he absorbs the residual heat from the dryer. He's right there though, just in case a cat might be called for in this process.

And of course after a hard day helping humans... any half grown cat needs a nap. Here's Mercia in her bed next to the wood stove catching some well deserved shut-eye.

As far as the barnyard critters go...

Baby chicks move to the outdoor house tomorrow. They've had plenty of people time in the backroom, and they are almost escaping size from their current digs. Look for some photos of moving day soon.

Stella update: Her bag and teats are yet larger... all 4 quarters now swelling a bit in preparation for milk production. She shows no other sign of labor, but my prediction is this Sunday March 7th, 2008... stay tuned!!

What's new pussycat?

Look how wide Stella is now! We're making a stall to milk her in when the time comes, so now she has to get used to going in it for her grain & hay. It will just have a rail or two, to keep her from getting squirrelly or kicking, but still allow up to get as up close & personal as we need to.

Last night's dinner was an adaptation of "British Open Top Steak, Ale and Stilton Pub Style Pies" We made one giant "pie" instead of smaller tarts & used a pint of homebrewed IPA instead of English ale. It was really tasty, and leftovers should be even better tonight.

Lord Crichton, barely tolerating the paparazzi interrupting his majesty's nap. What a hard life!

Speaking of spoiled kitties - Mercia & Magnus have just about outgrown their favorite fireside basket. Somehow the sharing and caring always turns into a brawl, but here they are before the sibling love went sour.

Cats and tatties

Magnus and Mercia with their laser eyes.

Mercia relaxing.

Magnus being a flat cat.

Must be treat time for everyone to hold still this long.

Snap the picture monkey, and I am sooooo gone!

And in other news... the recent steady bout of 20 degree weather has done in our Reddale seed potatoes that we'd harvested and kept over from last year. We'd made a makshift cold storage on the back porch, but the steady cold finally froze them. They'd done great until now. We seriously need a root cellar or house cold room for just this reason. Have to see when/where we can get something better built!

What's New...

Not a whole lot actually. Just trying to stay dry and warm in this cold, damp, rainy weather as the days slowly get longer. We added a Concept 2 rowing machine last month to aid in staying in shape as well as to prep for summer hiking season. Apparently Magnus feels it's also the perfect lounger for kitties. We really love the rowing machine and both use it 5 days a week. We're also part of a "virtual" rowing crew, and combine our miles on the Concept 2 site as we participate in online rowing competitions.

We bottled a 90 shilling Scotch Ale last night. It was a gift to us and came from Seven Bridges Cooperative purveyor of organic brewing ingredients. As usual we were subject to supervision by one of the kitties.

Feel the love...

Feel the disapproval! Crichton, obviously doing his ST-TNG Worf impression, "I should kill you where you stand!"

Animal Interlude

Can you spot the "cat"alogue?

Laser-eye's set to kill... sure they LOOK cute, but they're also deadly!

Post dinner somnombulance...

Wrapping paper rampage

See for youself:

The Cat and the Moon

The cat went here and there

and the moon spun round like a top,

and the nearest kin of the moon,

the creeping cat, looked up.

Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,

for, wander and wail as he would,

the pure cold light in the sky

troubled his animal blood.

Minnaloushe runs in the grass

lifting his delicate feet.

Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?

When two close kindred meet,

what better than call a dance?

Maybe the moon may learn,

tired of that courtly fashion,

a new dance turn.

Minnaloushe creeps through the grass

from moonlit place to place,

the sacred moon overhead

has taken a new phase.

Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils

will pass from change to change,

and that from round to crescent,

from crescent to round they range?

Minnaloushe creeps through the grass

alone, important and wise,

and lifts to the changing moon

his changing eyes.

Stews last stand

Chickens are moving in for the kill. Stew's looking scared or guilty... maybe both.
Maybe they'll be gentle.

Mercia's soft fluffy tummy, begging for a rub.
Gotta love the smile... she must be dreaming about saucers of cream.
Honestly, open the fridge for milk and the buggers'll mow you down trying to get some!

The rocking chair has become a favorite kitten hang-out. That is when they are not ripping around the house like rocket cats!

We interrupt this blog for Critter Porn!

Will the rain EVER stop? I need more cud.

Where are the cat treats?!

Got your "partridge in a pear tree" right here... in our bellies!

Adore me in my basket.

Fetch my slippers... before I lose my temper!

Stew attempts for lift off velocity with his tail. Fergus is noticeably skeptical as any Corgi would be.

Not the flash... Doh!

Latest Pest: Kitchen rats!! (Kittens!)

Ever have trouble with these?
Little closer for more detail. Little pests are into everything... even freshly cleaned brewing equipment waiting to be put up. Ah well... what's another scrubbing or three?

A rare moment of rest. Thing about kitchen rats is they never slow down... this is indeed a rare moment.

The moment of quiet lasted about 5 seconds before they were back sidling under the kitchen cupboards, and climbing the walls. But look at how peaceful and cute they CAN be. Albeit rarely.

Giving thanks for kittens and beer!

I added a loft to the kitten pen so they could have a little more playroom. They are still a long ways off from being able to rampage through the house unsupervised.
Time to bottle the cream ale. Can't get much done until the brewery inspectors sign off on everything.

And Magnus Brewster, getting a few more hours of apprentice training under his belt. He'll no doubt be big enough to stir the brew kettle by summer.

Look at these most excellent floor polishers. A wonderful addition to any brew kitchen cleaning regimen!
